Boots in the Mud
Written by Clare Nolan
Boots in the mud, head in the clouds
This is a war, son, we don’t mess around
You’re a long way from home, you’re scared, they all know it
But that’s just fine, they’re scared too, an’ they show it
This man here beside you, he might be next to fall
Or it might just be me, death comes to us all
Boots in the mud, head in the clouds
I head guns and bombs, men dying, that awful sounds
I know you’re a veteran, you’re seen a good bit more
But I know something you might not and I sure don’t like war
There’s a God above, even with this war and all
And I pray every night that He won’t let us fall
Boots in the mud, head in the clouds
In the end we all knew we didn’t have it figured out
Six was the day the tide turned, six then were the years
Sixty the million and more for whom we all shed tears
What seemed hopeless battles, that we thought were lost
Those soldiers won at too high a cost
Boots in the mud, head in the clouds
Every man, woman, child, it’s how they turned out
In the middle of the summer, in the middle of the year
He was with them then, the God the private knew
And He is with them always, to save them and what is true
