How to Not be a Raging Dumpster Fire
At this point, everyone knows that 2020 is a raging dumpster fire, but that doesn’t mean you have to be one! Of course, in this bizarre time, it is easier said than done. Here are a few tips to avoid being a dumpster fire, especially as we draw near to finals week.
- Take frequent breaks. You will likely get more done in three chunks of half an hour than if you work for one and a half hours straight. Taking breaks will help you rest your mind and prevent burnout. (Disclaimer: Make sure your break does not turn into a full stop. Decide how long your break will be before you take it. It is far too easy to let a so-called “break” turn into a Netflix binge.)
- Try listening to music while you work. For some people, especially those with ADHD, listening to music provides the extra stimulation your brain needs to focus.
- Schedule some quiet time for just you and God. How can your heart be full if your spirit hasn’t been refilled? Whether it’s a prayerful walk by the pond or doing your devotionals, spending time with God refreshes your soul in a way that nothing else can.
- Take some time to do something fun! Spend some (socially-distanced) time with friends, find a new coffee shop, or make something crafty. Whatever it is that helps you relax, allow yourself to slow down and do it.
- Take care of yourself. Eat healthy, exercise, and get plenty of sleep! I know, everyone tells you that this is important, but maybe that means it’s time to try it. Besides, do you really function well at all when you’re living on ramen and chips after getting 2 hours of sleep?
- Just do it. Procrastinating not only puts off the assignment or the task, but it puts off your relief and peace of mind.
- Have a friend keep you accountable. If you struggle with getting things done, they can give you a kick start. If need be, they can drag you to the library for the first time this semester. On the other hand, if you never take a break, your friend can wrest the laptop and books from your hand as they force you into the sunshine for the first time in a week.
