Say “Aloha” to the New School Year!

In spite of the rain on Friday, August 31, the MAC bustled with students and staff
in bright Hawaiian garb. Hosted by Student Government Association and Student Life,
the Hawaiian Kick Off Barbecue was not delayed or hindered in any way by the
weather. There was a sizable turnout as students came together to celebrate the
beginning of the 2018-19 school year with burgers, hotdogs, and much more. This year,
the barbecue saw the addition of Hawaiian music to complement the tropical decor.
After the food was served and the music faded, students competed in several
competitions throughout the night: a watermelon eating contest, corn hole,
and spike ball.

The night started with the watermelon contest. Many competed, and
everyone ate with tremendous speed, but Brian Jennings was ultimately victorious.
However, a different kind of victory was won by all who successfully kept the
watermelon down. Next, several teams competed in the corn hole tournament following
the intensive pre-game warm-ups. This year’s winners were Nat Ross and Paul
Ragonese. As the corn hole games ran in the dining hall, the spike ball tournament was
in full force in the MAC upper lobby. Amid many teams who dove for the prize, Dom
Maglione and Joshua Melchior triumphed.

Congratulations to this year’s winners, and to all of the competitors for making
this barbecue memorable. Also, a special thank you to those who worked and served to
make the event possible. Finally, good luck and best of wishes to the Cairn community
at the start of another academic school year.
