The Journey
Fall brings leaves that change from spring greens to magnificent golds and fiery reds. It also brings a brand new school year for students of all ages. This season is particularly significant for college freshmen and seniors alike – both about to embark on new journeys with exciting paths ahead. This is officially the starting line for new beginnings. As we all begin our journeys, we must not forget one important word: introspection. Look inward at yourself as you begin your journey. What do you value? What do you believe is most important? Why?
Freshmen: You’ve been waiting for this new stage of life for a long time now. You’re finally ready to embark on a journey to more friendships, more learning, more challenges, and yes, more freedom. You’re learning what it’s like to be away from home, and what it’s like to be new again—to trust those who have been in your place before.
Seniors: You were freshmen only a few short years ago. Give them the guidance they need to succeed in this part of their journeys! Graduation is only months away, and then you will embark on new journeys of your own, out in the real world. You may need to evaluate what it means to be introspective all over again. You are equipped with your freedom and your degree, having survived the challenges that have been sent your way these last several years.
For those in between, you’ll get where you want to be soon enough. You just need to get through one more Theology class, or maybe Lit & Arts, or another course that you are dreading. You can do it—even if it takes an all-nighter or two (trust me, I’ve been there). The important part we often forget is to stay motivated from the beginning of the journey to the end!
If you are wondering if you are in the right place or going the right direction, remember that God will always get you where you need to be.
What do you need to start your new journey?
“Then they said to him, ‘Please inquire of God to learn whether our journey will be successful.’ The priest answered them,‘Go in peace. Your journey has the LORD’s approval.’”
Judges 18:5-6 (NIV)

What do I believe is most important? When I look within (introspection) to reflect on my values, I think of my love for writing and desire to leave a legacy through it. But when I look beyond myself, I am reminded of Someone greater than me who deserves all the glory and praise. I want to leave a legacy of the gospel in some way, whether through my writing or investment in my children in the faith. Evangelism, discipleship, writing/art… I love how Jesus in Matthew 6 teaches people not to store up treasures on earth but in heaven.
