Written by Paul Ragonese

If beauty is not in the glass flat lake,

It arrives with a splash and ripples.

If beauty is not in the orange, falling leaves,

It buds with the flowers in May.

If beauty is not in the pills and doctors’ visits,

It knocks with a casserole from the neighbors.

If beauty is not in the lonely,

Self-isolating depression,

It shows up at your door with nerf guns

And movies and snacks in hand.

If beauty is not in the day,

It is found in the setting sun.

If beauty is not in the night,

It rises at dawn.

But beauty is in the glass-flat lake,

It is in the orange falling leaves.

It is in the pills and doctors’ visits,

It is in the lonely depression.

It is in the night and day.

Under-appreciated beauty

(or mis-appreciated beauty)

Leaves and returns in a new way.

God has mercy on our foolish hearts.
