Cairn Golf Preview
Cairn University Athletics has seen a massive upturn in production over the last couple of years. Soccer, basketball, and baseball have all seen improved talent, and the overall complexion of the athletic department has seen a substantial improvement. One team seems primed to join that class of talent, looking to become one of the perennial teams in the CSAC this upcoming Spring.
Enter Cairn University Golf. After a less than mediocre fall season, the Highlanders enter the Spring going through a talent overhaul, swapping out their seniors for talented young players that will surely make a significant impact for the Highlanders this season.
Leading the way for the Highlanders this Spring will be freshman Ryan Bormann. Playing in the #1 spot during the fall, Bormann made a statement to start his Highlander career, compiling a 79.4 scoring average over 7 rounds to lead the Highlanders. Cairn will rely on Borrmann for consistent scoring this year, as he has shown in his young career that he can go low. If he keeps up his consistent play, contention at the CSAC championships is not out of the question. Bormann’s best round this fall came at Lebanon Country Club when he carded a 76 at the par 72 track.
Mike Boucher, Stephen Berger, and Jared Lanchack will also be relied upon for Cairn University. Berger, a transfer from Harrisburg Community College is a huge addition to the team, and will certainly provide experience and potential that the Highlanders lacked this fall. Lanchack will certainly be a name to watch as well. After taking the fall off to compete for Men’s soccer, Lanchack returns to the team with a lot of hype. If his short game comes around, he could make a huge impact for the Highlanders. All three of these players have All-conference potential if they play to the best of their ability.
Rounding out the lineup for the Highlanders will be Nate Borrmann. The elder of the two Borrmann’s, Nate provides tenacity and determination that goes unmatched and will be a perfect security blanket for the Highlanders if their top four players have a bad round.
The Highlander will be coached by William Marshall and Ian Zang. Marshall has shown his coaching prowess in the past, notching CSAC Coach of the Year honors back in 2011. However, Coach Ian Zang will be relied upon greatly as well, as his on-course coaching, and relatability to the players will significantly help the team going forward, as he is a former Cairn University golfer himself. Zang was the number one player during his senior season, compiling an 86.5 scoring average to lead the team. His knowledge and experience will be coveted as the Highlanders look to compete with some of the top teams in the CSAC.
The Highlanders will get their season started on March 31 at Scotland Run Golf Club, and their season will culminate at the CSAC Championship tournament at the end of April. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the Highlanders season.
