Christian Music Recommendation

The genre of “Christian music” can sometimes carry a negative connotation. All too often the music itself sounds canned, the lyrics can be cringey, and often too “cheery” and far from reality. Although music preference is solely dependent on the listener, the genre of “Christian & Gospel” often finds itself toward the bottom of popular music genres.

As followers of Christ, God’s Word, and most specifically Philippians 4:8, directs us to think and meditate on what is holy, noble, excellent, and praiseworthy. So, as followers of Christ, we should strive to incorporate music into our frequently rotated playlists that is holy, noble, excellent, and praiseworthy. A Christian’s relationship with music tends to be an issue based in conviction; but, a Christian’s relationship with God should be based in the things of Philippians 4:8. Can there be a healthy balance of secular and Christian music? Certainly. Should there be a presence of God-honoring music in each Christian’s life? Definitely.

With all of this to say, here are a few recommendations of Christian artists far from the cringe-factor and more toward the Philippians 4:8 factor.

I AM THEY — “Trial & Triumph”

I like to think of I AM THEY as a mix between Hillsong and Rend Collective. The singers voices are pure, the instruments are varied, and the lyrics are realistic and infused with Scripture. Their most recent album, “Trial & Triumph,” places an emphasis on God’s goodness, faithfulness, and glory. The songs are grounded in originality and exhibit the band’s evident love for Christ. The band seems to be an up-and-coming group, but are consistently increasing in popularity. My favorites on this album are, “The Water,” “Scars,” and “Let Your Love Pour Out.”

Jordan Feliz — “Future”

Solo artist Jordan Feliz has been around for some time, and initially made waves in the Christian music realm with his hit, “The River,” and later with “Witness” from his newest album. Feliz is an evident talent, and focuses his lyrics on God’s attributes, as well on his own relationship with God. His newest album future resembles music from the Pop genre, but pairs the sound with lyrics focused on the things of God. My favorites on this album are, “Pages,” “Blank Canvas,” and “My Shelter.”

Hannah Kerr — “Overflow”

At twenty-one years old and resembling that of Lauren Daigle’s music, Hannah Kerr is a rising star in the world of Christian music. Her songs are relevant and real, and focus on the realities of living for Christ. Her message is grounded in leaving a lasting impact on the world around her for God’s glory, and her music is uplifting and pleasant. Some of my favorites on this album are, “Undivided,” “Overflow,” and “Love I Leave.”

Cory Asbury — “Reckless Love”

Some of you reading this review may have sang one of Asbury’s  songs during your most recent church service. “Reckless Love,” the title of his 2018 album, is also a song featured on the album, and often featured in church worship sets. Asbury released his debut album on iTunes in 2009, but has since been involved with Bethel Music. His 2018 album features songs that praise God’s nature and excellence, points the listener toward fellowship with Christ, and speaks to God’s awesome power. Some of my favorites from this album are, “Reckless Love,” “Endless Alleluia,” and “Garments.”
